Description

"Six years ago, I looked at a picture of the world's greatest newspapermen. I felt like a kid in front of a candy store. Well tonight, six years later, I got my candy, all of it" - Charles Foster Kane, Citizen Kane (1941)

This quote passed through my head tonight as I gazed upon this sketch. Though unlike Kane, my candy came to me after 14 years.

One comic that was part of my youth was Gen 13, and pretty soon, one thing that kept me coming back to this comic was the art of J Scott Campbell. When the ongoing series was released in 1995, 13 variant covers were released, along with a 'Do-It-Yourself' cover. I wasn't able to obtain this cover in 1995 (it took almost the entire year and over $275 to get all 13 covers), but brought it with me to Comic-Con 1996 in hopes that Mr Campbell might sign it. Sadly, he was away in Europe at the time, though Jim Lee did sign and draw on my cover then (Mr Lee's art is also hear in my little gallery).

I obtained another #1 'DIY' cover, but did not encounter Mr Campbell again until 2005, when he was in Chicago for Wizard World. Sadly, due to the number of people in line, he was not able to fulfill my request.

And then today, 4/17/10, I went to C2E2 with strong hopes that my wish would be fulfilled (Campbell was the main reason for my attending the new convention in Chicago). Along with my request for Campbell to sign my European Tour Edition of Gen 13 #11 (of which in 1996, I was able to have signed by Lee, Brandon Choi, and Alex Garner), I explained my quest in hopes that he would draw Caitlin Fairchild on the 'Do-It-Yourself' cover in my possession.

Jeff fulfilled my request, and it was interesting to see him at work. I figured he couldn't do a full-on rendering (due to the line of people waiting to see him), but he did a light outline in mechanical pencil, before finishing up with a Sharpie, giving Fairchild just that right touch of innocence that I remembered from her character (a nice contrast to the more 'determined' look that Jim Lee drew of her).

And so, I'd say my C2E2 trip was definitely memorable. Thanks again, Jeff. Hope one day you can finish Wildsiderz. I'll keep checking the comic shelves until that day.

Btw, if you've ever seen any issues of Gen 13, and compare some images to my pages of Beach Blanket Blueberry, I think it's fair to say that Jeff's slack-jawed guys and gals needled their way into many of my character moments.

Maybe I should check out that comic, I do love your blueberry characters and your art style.
