This was a piece that had been in my mind for awhile. The idea here is, that as a squirrel, Wart had the wrong spell placed on him by Merlin-instead of changing him back into a boy, Merlin accidentally caused the little squirrel to turn blue, and blow up into a blueberry.
Naturally, the girl squirrel that had been chasing him thought this was cute, and begins to roll him back to her hole in the tree.
This took me quite awhile to get down, and myriad concepts, thumbnail sketches, and analyzing screengrabs from the film resulted in this product here. Unlike the very flat 2-D stylings of the characters in 'The Sword and the Stone,' I strove to make them more 3-dimensional, with light and shadow. Originally, their eyes were too large, so I digitally shrank the down, which made them not as grotesque. Big eyes on a character can only work on so many.
I may do a follow-up to this piece. I had this idea that the little girl squirrel would be trying to squeeze the enormously round Wart into her hole in the tree, with his rear-end hanging outside, much like the way Rabbit was trying to squeeze Winnie the Pooh out of his front door.
